Ward Reservation Impact – Young And New Faces May Replace Next Nmmc House
The ward-reservation process to define the wards that will go for elections in 2010 are set. With most senior corporators loosing out their sitting seats in the reservation, looks like young and new faces are all set to reign the next house of public representatives in the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation.
In the NMMC elections to be held next year, there are a total of 89 wards that will go elections. And on the face of it, the division of these wards looks simple. Of the 89 wards :
Ø 6 wards have been reserved for SC that is Scheduled Caste. Of these two are reserved for women.
Ø 1 ward has been reserved for Scheduled Tribe woman.
Ø 24 wards have been reserved for OBC with 8 for women.
Ø So 58 wards fall in the open category with 19 reserved for women. While this sounds fair enough, many senior and sitting corporators of NMMC will beg to differ, simple because they have lost their chances of contesting from their present wards after reservation. We’ll give you a few names who have faced set backs after the reservation.
Ø The first in the list is Shiv Sena’s Vijay Chougule. His present ward no. 7 of Chinchpada has been reserved for women of “Scheduled Caste”.
Ø NCP’s Mahadev Thorat – sitting corporator of ward no. 9 at Airoli village has lost his ward to the category of “OBC female”.
Ø NCP’s Ashok Patil of Airoli Node 1 has lost his ward no. 15 to “OBC”.
Ø Another big set back has been for Sudhakar Sonawane. The sitting corporator of Ambedkar Nagar’s ward 18 is now an open ward reserved for “Women”.
Ø Former Mayor Manisha Bhoir’s ward no. 23 at Khairane-MIDC has been reserved for “Scheduled Caste”.
Ø NCP’s Sanjay Patil’s ward no. 26 at Ghansoli 2 has been reserved for “OBC Female”.
Ø NCP’s Rupali Sanas’s ward no. 33 at Koperkhairane Node 5 has been reserved for “OBC”
Ø NCP’s Hande Patil’s ward no. 35 at KK node 1 has been reserved for “OBC Female”.
Ø NCP’s Suresh Kulkarni’s ward no. 42 at Turbhe Store has been reserved for “OBC”.
Ø NCP’s Vivek Patil’s ward no. 43 at APMC has been reserved for “Open Female”.

Ø Shiv Sena’s Somnath Vaskar’s ward no. 63 at Sanpada has been reserved for “OBC Female”.
Ø Another big set back for NCP is that J D Sutar’s ward no. 67 at Shirawne 1 has been reserved for “Open Female”.
Ø Another set back for NCP is that Shashikant Birajdar’s ward no. 74 at Nerul node. 8 has been reserved for “Open Female”.
Ø Again NCP’s Ashok Patil’s ward no. 81 at Agroli village at Belapur has been reserved for “Open Female”
Ø NCP’s Dr. Jayaji Nath’s ward no. 83 at Belapur Node. 4 has been reserved for “Open Female”.
Ø A big set back for Shiv Sena has been Abhimanyu Koli’s ward no. 85 has been reserved “Scheduled Tribe Woman”
Ø NCP’s Ravindra Ithape’s ward no. 80 at Nerul node 8 has been reserved for “Open Female.”
Ø Again set back for BJP as their lone corporator Bharat Jadhav’s ward no. 87 at Nerul NRI has been reserved for “Open Female”.
Ø Even Congress Eknath Tandel’s ward no. 89 at Karave has been reserved for “Open Female.”
Ø Congress’s Namdeo Bhagat’s ward no. 77 at Nerul node 3 has been reserved for “OBC”.
Ø Congress Indumati Bhagat’s ward no. 79 at Nerul village has been reserved for “OBC Female”.
Ø Congress’s Dr Vilas Kadam’s ward no. 83 at Belapur node 3 has been reserved for “OBC Female”
Ø NCP’s Sandeep Naik original ward Khairane has come under “Open” category while Bonkode has been reserved for “Open Female” while.
While some other senior corporators that include Ramakant Mhatre, Vinaya Madhvi, M K Madhvi, Shivram Patil, Madhavi Shinde, Bharat Nakhate and Dashrath Bhagat’s ward are still under categories from which they can contest again. The way the reservation of wards has changed the categories of eligible candidates, many senior corporators might just have no option but to stay out of the race while young and new faces will dominate the election scenario and perhaps reign the new house of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation in the next elections. Beyond any doubt change will be for the better.
