VERTICAL MARCH CONTINUES FOR NO OF HIGH-RISES IN CITY

Developers in the city seem to be continuing to set their sights high. Over the past five years, there has been a steady increase in the number of proposals for high-rises received by the state-appointed committee that clears such projects.

All projects more than 70 metres highwhich means buildings that have at least 18 to 21 storeysmust be approved by the high-rise committee. In 2004, while there were only five such proposals, in 2005 the number shot up to 23. Subsequently, the number climbed to 32, 38 and 42 in the years 2006, 2007 and 2008, respectively.
By the third week of May 2009, the panel had already received 20 such proposals. Committee members expect proposals to keep coming in despite two developers changing their plans to restrict projects to less than 70 metres earlier this year, apparently because of the recent slowdown. B V Chavan, chairman of the high-rise scrutiny committee, said the governments policies, including the push to free land for development, should keep developers coming up with more high-rise proposals.
