Almost 80 per cent of the row houses in sector 6, 7 and 8 in Vashi have illegally extended their homes, a survey conducted by Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has revealed.

After an RTI plea, NMMC conducted the survey of row houses at sector 6,7 and 8 of Vashi. The Bombay High Court too has instructed all civic bodies to undertake such surveys to check on such unauthorized constructions. Out of 675 homes visited so far, NMMC officials found that 590 owners had extended their homes without prior permissions in these three sectors in Vashi. However, speaking on the illegal extensions, residents of these sectors gave their point of view. They informed that the row houses were in such dilapidated condition that leakage through walls was a common occurrence and if they don’t put a shed on top, there are chances of the roof slab falling.

Row houses also have a common area between them and hence some have amicably divided the area with a common wall. Robberies and theft and also a problem that the residents face. NMMC however says that once the survey is completed, it will start issuing notices and demolish the illegal extensions if corrective action is not taken by the owners.
