The Democratic Front government has decided to allow the state Public Works Department (PWD) to implement the Rs 845 crore Sion-Panvel road-widening and improvement project, and set up a new toll naka at Kamothe to recover the project cost.

According to a plan approved by the Vilasrao Deshmukh government in November last year, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) was to implement the project. The five toll nakas at entry points to Mumbai—Vashi, Thane, Mulund, Dahisar and Airoli—were to be linked to the project to recover costs.
The changes were approved by the Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure a few days ago. The new toll naka at Kamothe—the third between Mumbai and Pune—will be located just 17 km from the Vashi toll naka. Interestingly, as per National Highway Authority of India guidelines, the minimum distance between two toll nakas should be at least 34 km. To facilitate creation of the new toll naka, the Cabinet subcommittee has decided to make amendments in the rules, sources said.
